So you’ve just hit 11 weeks and can’t wait another second to see the little life growing inside you. You’re not alone, this is one of the most popular weeks for our “First Glimpse” ultrasounds at The Art of Motherhood. But what can you actually expect to see this early in the journey?
Spoiler alert: It’s tiny. It’s real. And it’s pure magic. ✨
Your Baby at 11 Weeks: Small, But Mighty
At just about 1.5 to 2 inches long, your baby is roughly the size of a fig (or a LEGO minifigure, if we’re being precise and adorable). Even though they’re still teeny-tiny, there’s already a surprising amount happening in there:
Movements: Your baby is dancing, even if you can’t feel it yet. Those early kicks, wiggles, and full-body stretches are some of the most delightful parts of this early scan. We’re talking Olympic-level flips, folks.
Limb Buddies: Arms and legs are forming fast, and you might even catch a glimpse of tiny fingers and toes beginning to spread apart. (They might be waving at you. Just sayin’.)
The Headline Act: That Giant Noggin
At this stage, your baby’s head is about half the size of their whole body. It’s adorably alien-esque, but also perfectly normal. Brain development is in full swing!
The Beating Heart
If you haven’t heard the heartbeat yet, get ready. It’s one of the most emotional moments we get to witness—and yes, you can add the sound to a plush keepsake right here in the studio.
4D Imaging at 11 Weeks: What It Looks Like
This isn’t the stage where you’re seeing chubby cheeks or yawns in hi-def. That comes later (around 27–32 weeks). But in 4D, we’re still able to catch real-time movements in a way that makes it feel like you’re meeting your baby, not just watching from a distance.
What you’ll likely see:
- A small but perfectly formed profile
- Bouncing and stretching movements
- Limb flutters and maybe even hand-to-face gestures
- A beautiful little blur of potential
Is it crystal-clear like a newborn photo? Not quite. But is it something you’ll remember forever? Absolutely.
Why Parents Love the 11-Week Peek
The 11-week scan is often the emotional icebreaker. You’ve seen the line on the stick, maybe heard a heartbeat—but seeing your baby move for the first time? That’s when it sinks in.
This is also a time when many parents are choosing to start telling family, announcing on social, or recording their journey. What better way to do that than with video clips or still images from your first real peek?
