Ultrasound at The Art of Motherhood: What You Need to Know Before You Book

If you’re planning a 3D or 4D ultrasound session at The Art of Motherhood, you probably have questions. You want to know what to expect, how to prepare, and what kind of images you’ll walk away with. Good. You should.

Our goal is to make your ultrasound experience exciting, stress-free, and clear from the start. Below, we’ve gathered answers to the most common questions we receive so you can book with confidence.

Is this a medical ultrasound?

No. All ultrasound appointments at The Art of Motherhood are non-diagnostic and for entertainment and keepsake purposes only. We do not assess fetal health or development, provide measurements, or diagnose any conditions.

You should be under the care of a healthcare provider during your pregnancy and should have already had your first diagnostic ultrasound before coming in for a keepsake scan.

What can I expect to see at different stages?

  • Early Peek (9 to 13 weeks): You’ll likely see your baby’s whole body in one image. Movement is often visible.
  • Gender Determination (14 weeks and up): If baby cooperates, we can tell you the sex with a high level of accuracy.
  • Best 3D/4D Imaging (27 to 32 weeks): This is the ideal window for clear, full facial features and expressive movement.
  • After 33 weeks: Imaging may still be possible, but space gets tight and clarity can vary.

How accurate is gender determination?

We offer gender reveals starting at 14 weeks. While there’s always a chance baby won’t be in the ideal position, we maintain a very high accuracy rate. If we’re unable to confirm during your session, we’ll bring you back for a complimentary rescan.

What happens if the baby is facing away or we can’t get good images?

We want you to leave with keepsakes you love. If baby is uncooperative or in a position that limits visibility, we will offer a free rescan. This is included in your original session price and is scheduled at our discretion, usually within 7 to 10 days.

Can I bring guests?

Absolutely. Our studio is designed to be a family-friendly experience. Our ultrasound suite can comfortably accommodate multiple guests. Children are welcome as long as they are supervised. We want this to be a shared, joyful moment for everyone involved.

Do I need to drink water beforehand?

Yes. For optimal imaging, we recommend drinking plenty of water for several days before your appointment. Hydration improves the clarity of the amniotic fluid, which in turn improves image quality.

Will I always get 3D/4D images?

3D/4D images depend on several factors including baby’s position, gestational age, and the amount of fluid around the face. While we always aim for the best views possible, some sessions may yield clearer images than others. That’s why we suggest scheduling your 3D/4D ultrasound during the optimal window of 27 to 32 weeks.

Is it safe?

Ultrasound technology has been used in pregnancy for decades. While our ultrasounds are non-diagnostic, they are performed by a trained and registered sonographer using equipment and protocols that align with safe practices for keepsake imaging. If you have concerns, you should always speak with your healthcare provider.

What makes The Art of Motherhood different?

Experience, clarity, and comfort. Your scan will be performed by Whitney Preuninger, RDMS, a registered OB sonographer (or one of her trained ultrasound techs) with over a decade of experience and a reputation for giving families the clearest, most meaningful first glimpses of their babies. Our space is purpose-built for keepsake ultrasounds and photography. That means your visit feels less like a clinical appointment and more like a celebration.
